Waiuku Primary School has been selected as one of 27 New Zealand schools to receive a share of $100,000 raised by Caltex customers in this year’s Fuel Your School initiative.

The grant will contribute toward the school’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) curriculum, in particular in developing the enterprise and environment programme.
More than 220 deserving applications from primary, intermediate, secondary and area schools across the country were received by the Royal Society of New Zealand, who is working with Caltex for the initiative.
Dr Andrew Cleland, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of New Zealand, said, “We were impressed with the quality of applications. We received over $900,000 of funding requests across the programme, making the decision process a competitive one. “We look forward to seeing how this extra funding will help Waiuku kids as their school develops its unique STEM-based activities over the coming months,” Dr Cleland said.
Waiuku Primary School Principal, Mr Simon Drewery, said, “We are very grateful and delighted to receive this generous award from Caltex New Zealand, which will help develop the enterprise and environment programme at our school.
The students designed an award-winning engineering project based on a mini-golf course, built and operated as a business in the community. This unique project will provide hands-on learning in a real-life context, with many exciting opportunities to design, create, build and operate, all conceived and completed by the students themselves.”
