Only two weeks into his new role, Adam Chwesik has hit the ground running, and is excited to be getting behind the local community.
The Franklin District Co-ordinator’s position through Counties Manukau Sport has been re-created after it ceased in 2015 due to lack of funding.
After seeing a huge demand and need for the role back in the Franklin area, Counties Manukau Sport and the Franklin Local Board, along with NZCT, have sourced essential funding for it to be re-established.
Adam has a great history with Counties Manukau Sport, and was originally Community Coach before leaving and becoming a youth worker, where he supported bail programmes for youth offenders.
He later returned to Counties Manukau Sport and joined the Primary Sport team, where he was team leader looking after the sport in schools programme.
The switch to the co-ordinator’s role has been a pretty fast change over, but Adam says he is looking forward to working within the Franklin community, and re-establishing the connections with local sports groups and clubs.
“Over the next few months, we will be holding ‘have a go’ days in the community, and try to emphasise the importance and benefits of physical activity through sport.”
Adam says that the ‘have a go’ days will also have different focuses, including the possibility of a ‘Girls Only’ day, and a BMX school holiday programme in Puni.
“It is about getting kids to try new things, different sports, that they usually wouldn’t get the chance to.”
Adam is also looking forward to helping assist and grow coaches within the community and clubs by hosting programmes to suit their needs.
The re-establishment of the role also means Adam will be involved with the Franklin Junior Sports awards, as well as the Volunteer Recognition Awards.
“Our volunteers and rising sports stars need the recognition, that is incredibly important.”
