Refurbished and purpose built

On Thursday 27 April the Waiuku Family Support held an official opening of their newly refurbished premises on Queen Street, Waiuku.
Waiuku Family Support offers general advice and budgeting. They are involved with Foodbank, youth anger counselling, organising Christmas gifts for children who would otherwise miss out, and offering free clothing and household goods when needed.
The organisation was established in 1987 by Jeanette Cooper and Sue Ushaw in a premise above the Dingle Dell Dairy.
It soon outgrew the two rooms available and when the old doctor's rooms became available they moved in.

The need for their services continues to grow and to meet future demands, it was decided to utilise the footprint they had in a more practical manner. Walls have been knocked down and new offices created. Each service how has a dedicated area, freshly painted and fitted out to suit.

Manager Jessica Timmins paid special thanks to the Robbins family for their dedication to seeing the project completed. "They even had their son project manage the whole refit," she said. "The new reception area sports a beautiful wooden counter, sourced by the Robbins, from Masterton. Their daughter lives nearby so she and her husband organised for the counter to be dismantled and shipped up to Waiuku. It was a real family effort by them."

They have 28 dedicated staff and volunteers who have continued to offer services right through the refit. "We moved into the old St Andrews Op Shop while all this was being completed," said Jessica.
The mission statement of Waiuku Family Support is  “To strengthen family life by helping individuals and families, through their own efforts to develop their skills, to become aware of resources available to them in the surrounding community”, and they certainly abide by that in their day to day running of the centre.
