Pukekohe Swimming placed at Champs

Swimming New Zealand held its annual Open Water Championships in Taupo over the weekend of January 9 and 10, which saw swimmers from Pukekohe Swimming Club compete against swimmers from around New Zealand.
The 10km Open water swim was raced on Saturday and the 5km swim on Sunday, and because this was a national championship, wetsuits were not permitted.
Abi Chapman and Rebecca Cheyne took part in the 10km swim, which due to the weather conditions was moved to Acacia Bay, Lake Taupo.
The water temperature was 18 degrees and the girls were excited but a little worried. The duo did extremely well in spite of trying weather conditions, and took out twelfth and thirteenth places respectively.
When it came to age related categories, Rebecca won her age group of 15 and Under, while Abi came sixth in her age group of 16 to 18 year olds.
The 5km event the next day had a bigger field of swimmers. Abi, Rebecca and Tanisha Robertson competed in this event. Abi took out second place in her age group and Rebecca eighth, while Tanisha was placed sixteenth in the 15 and Under age group. “The girls made us all proud, with their combined points in both events, putting Pukekohe fourth nationally at the Open Water Champs,” says Sue Cheyne of Pukekohe Swimming Club.
