The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation has recently announced that 63 nominations have been received for six categories at the 53rd Halberg Awards, with Waiuku’s, Michael Johnson being one of the nominations. The Paralympic Shooter has been nominated for the Disabled Sportsperson of the Year category and this is the third time Michael has been nominated.
He says ‘it is a great feeling to be considered once more’.
The Halberg Awards are the nation’s preeminent event to honour and celebrate sporting achievements by New Zealand teams and athletes in 2015. Twenty seven different sports are represented in the nominations which are received from National Sports Organisations and an independent Voting Academy, “I hope that I am selected as a finalist, and if I was to win it would be a great achievement. This year there have been so many outstanding performances by NZ Paralympic athletes, so to be even considered for the award is an achievement in itself. I look forward to finding out who the finalists are, and wish everybody the best of luck.” Michael is up against Corey Peters for Para-Skiing, Emma Foy and Laura Thompson for Para-Cycling, Jessica Hamill and Rory McSweeney for Para-Athletics and Nikita Howarth and Sophie Pascoe for Para-Swimming.
Nominations will now go to the Halberg Awards judges who will review the achievements submitted to decide the finalists which will be announced in early January 2016.
