Merchant Navy Day commemorated

Merchant Navy Day was marked in Waiuku on Sunday 3 September, with the Merchant Marine ensign being flown at the cenotaph throughout the day.
September 3 is designated as the Service’s special day, being the anniversary of the first sinking of an allied merchant ship in World War II.  The sinking occurred barely hours after the outbreak of the war.
The merchant flag, together with New Zealand’s national flag, were raised by merchant marine and RSA members in memory of the many thousands of civilian Navy war casualties.
