To commence with Waitangi Day celebrations, Marama Hou Industries Trust has recently received a grant from Auckland Council to teach the Waiuku community how to create and cook their own hangi.
Held on Monday, February 6, the group will be located at the Hamilton Estate Community Hall and encourage anyone who would like to learn how to make a traditional hangi to be there from 9am.
“We love being able to provide our community with the tools to feed our whanau, and what a better way in doing so by learning how to create a hangi. For me, Waitangi Day is about celebrating cultures uniting and togetherness, and anyone is welcome to attend,” says Grace van den Brink.
The group will be teaching kai preparation right through to cooking, and will also be teaching those who would like to learn how to make a kono using the traditional flax basket method.
“All you need to bring is a positive attitude,” says Grace.
