Just some simple advice—use your high-beam lights on rural roads at night, dim them of course when following other traffic or for opposite traffic.
It gives you a lot more time to react. An added advantage is that opposite traffic sees you much earlier and will not be tempted to cut corners!
By the way, I was also taught to use high beam with heavy fog in daytime (not to see better, but to be seen!).
