From the Mayor’s chair—12 December 2017

Mayor Allan Sanson
Waikato District
November was a busy month with a lot going on across the Waikato District Council.
I was at the Lakeside Christmas Carols in Huntly last weekend. This is a great event every year where families and kids get together to celebrate Christmas. This year there were a few hundred people who came along to sing and spend time with friends and family.
I was also lucky enough to present long service medals to two members of the Raglan Volunteer Fire Brigade. It’s great to recognise those who go above and beyond for their communities and this sort of event is always a highlight for me.
As is always the case at this time of year, it was fabulous to celebrate success at a number of school prizegivings and the district sports awards organised by Sport Waikato. It was great to see so many talented people, whether it be in academics, art, culture or sport, recognised for the effort and work they put into their chosen field.
Another celebration I was at last month was the first ever citizenship ceremony at Turangawaewae Marae. The ceremony began with a full powhiri for 35 new citizens and their families. We’ll be looking to host at least one citizenship ceremony on the marae each year from now on.
We’ve had the driest November on record and it sounds like it’s going to be a very hot summer so it’s timely to remind you all about the fire and water restrictions currently in place across the district. Keep an eye on Council’s website for up to date information about these restrictions.
It’s been a really busy year so this Christmas, Trish and I hope to put our feet up. We’ll be visiting friends and family we don’t get the chance to see through the year and will be getting reinvigorated for a busy 2018. We hope you and your family get to do the same.
Our roads are getting busier so if you’re driving over the festive season, please do so safely.
I look forward to seeing you all in 2018.
