Unbeaten, unrivalled and under 13. Franklin Basketball’s under 13 boys’ team have come out on top of the table at ABSL Super City Basketball competition for 2017, becoming the first Franklin team to ever take out the competition.
Competing in the A grade, the boys, aged 10-12 faced other representative teams from North Harbour, Auckland, Counties Manukau and Waitakere.
This is the fourth year Franklin Basketball has played at a representative level, but the first year they’ve won the competition.
“We’ve spent time and resources building up the younger players to establish a strong foundation for the future,” said Jamie Reddish from Franklin Basketball. Jamie coached the boys before handing it over to Joe, while he and Nicola Post coached the girls team.
The boys’ U13 played North Harbour in the semi-final and Waitakere in the final, with the games taking place on Saturday 23 September.
“Our teams do well in the B grade, but this is a step up for us, and the boys took out the competition,” Jamie said.
“They have only been together for this season, so many of them had never even played together before,” he said.
Co-captains Noah Campbell and Brody Perry say they’re proud of how they’ve played.
“It’s good to play with the team and have fun,” Noah said. Brody agrees, “It feels good to be the best in Auckland.” Their sentiments are reflected by coach Joe Reddish.
“We had some tough games, but they played really well. It’s been great.” The girls’ U13 team also succeeded in their competition, placing third. “They only lost two games in the season,” Jaime said.
“They came third in division one. One of those teams is from Waikato, so the girls are second best in Auckland,” he said. Both Franklin Basketball teams now head to the Northern Zone regional championships, which will take place in Tauranga from Wednesday 11 to Saturday 14 October.
“There’s a lot of talent from our younger players.” Joe said. “It’s exciting to see them grow.”
