The teams at the Franklin Basketball Club have had a successful start to the season, coming away with several placings from tournaments held across the region.
In April, both the Franklin U15 and U17 girls teams made it to their finals after five weeks of tournaments. Beating both the Counties and Auckland teams, the final game score was 42 to 33 making the Franklin U17 the overall winners, with the Franklin U15 in second place.
Every year, teams from Franklin Basketball travel to Tauranga to compete in the Mel Young Basketball Classic Tournament. Held over Easter weekend, this is a massive event where Franklin get to compete against teams from Waikato, Tauranga, Rotorua, Palmerston North, Thames Valley, Hibiscus Coast, Central Country, North Sydney and Waitakere.
The following are the results: U11 Boys: Franklin Black, 5th; U11 Girls: Franklin, 7th; U13 Boys: Franklin Black, 1st, Franklin Yellow, 6th; U13 Girls: Franklin Black, 7th, Franklin Yellow, 11th; U15 Boys: Franklin Black, 7th, Franklin Yellow, 8th; U15 Girls: Franklin, 5th; U17 Boys: Franklin Black, 8th, Franklin Yellow, 8th; U17 Girls: Franklin, 2nd; U19 Boys: Franklin, 4th.
Franklin Basketball began in 2009, with only a handful of children wanting to learn how to play. In the past eight years more and more children have taken up the sport. Franklin Basketball now has over 300 children within the junior programs, and provides a league for all of the local secondary schools.
Not only are Franklin developing basketball players, but there is also a huge focus on developing quality referees and coaches through participation in coaching clinics and high performance training camps and tours.
However, the club agrees that the current and future success would not have been possible without the support of all of the parents, past and present coaches, as well as the Franklin community who have supported them over the years.
