Busy time for Coastguard Waiuku

Waiuku Coastguard were called into action onSaturday afternoon to assist a boat which ran out offuel and had also lost their anchore. NZ Steel Rescuetowed the boat to Te Toro boat ramp.

Over the summer so far Coastguard Waiuku has had thirteen calls for assistance. None of a serious nature but things can go wrong very quickly when least expected. Calls so far are :

• 5th: Jet ski on Waikato River towed to Tuakau Ramp. Tow from Waiuku Channel to Big Bay.
• 16th: Tow from Grahams Beach to Waiau Pa
• 28th: Tow from Papakura channel to Matakawau Point. Tow from Awhitu to Te Toro.
• 29th: Call to two people on inflatable swan. Stood down.
• 30th: Call to assist boat over Manukau Bar to Little Huia.
• January 3rd: 9.30pm Flare sighting by Weymouth. Boat out of fuel. They got fuel from mates and went home while we searched for them. They had sent message on a different channel Conditions heavy rain .
• 4th: Boat called up and said it was taking on water on Bar but did not identify which Bar. Nothing found by Coastguard Air patrol or NZ Steel rescue.
• 15th: Tow from Grahams Beach to Waiau Pa Steering seized. Boat out of fuel over Manukau Bar Stood down. Towed by member of public.
• 16th: Tow from Big Bay to Te Toro
• 17th: 11.00pm Three kayakers over due from a trip from Clarks Beach to Drury. Had decided to return to Weymouth because of low tide Finally arrived at 11.30pm Stood down.
For all callouts NZ STEEL RESCUE or THE POST RESCUE were deployed Most calls were for mechanical faults of various types.

Boaties are reminded that it is compulsory to wear Lifejackets at all times in boats under six metres in Auckland and Waikato Regional areas.
