On Wednesday October 28, Italia, a Canteen worker, came to Waiuku College to accept a cheque for $11,000, which was raised by the students.

Shane Burns, a Year 13 Prefect, spoke to both the senior and junior school about his contribution towards the $11,000. He alone raised $2500 through quiz nights, and donations for shaving his hair on the day of the Canteen Carnival. This however wasn’t his only contribution to the money made, as he was nominated for the ASB Good as Gold award run through Newstalk ZB by a family friend.
They were so impressed by the fundraising effort he had made, that they decided to match the $2500 he raised himself, thus increasing his total contribution to $5000.
Amber-Lee Lawrie, a current Year 12 student at Waiuku College, and a Canteen member herself, then spoke to the students about the difference their money would make to teens living with cancer.
She spoke of the difference Canteen has made in her life, from arranging to have pizza once a week (which was a welcome change from hospital food), providing activities and crafts to do during the long days spent in hospital, to hosting national and regional camps for all types of Canteen members.
Amber-Lee was very excited to have Italia present at the assembly, as she has been Amber’s Canteen support member since she was diagnosed in 2011.
The Carnival organisers would like to say a big thanks to everyone who supported the event in any way, from individual donations, to those who shaved their hair, or brought an item from the stalls run by Year 11 Business Studies students who donated 40 percent of their profits for Canteen.
They would also like to thank those who attended and supported Fight for Life, as some of their profits also were contributed to the grand total of $11,000 being donated to Canteen.
Also, a huge thank you to Leonie Cook is in order. She, along with Tracey Kingi, was instrumental in the organisation of both the Canteen Carnival, and the Fight for Life .
