A note from Emma’s desk
We really hope you enjoyed your birthday weekend, and managed to fit in some well deserved relaxation between covering events.
This week we had our deadlines moved forward, which saw the team in the office over the weekend, trying to cram in as many stories as possible before our Sunday afternoon deadline.
On page three, we have a story about Awhitu Rural Fire Force member, Billy Torpey.
He is what I would describe as one of the many unsung, yet so humble, heroes of our community.
Billy is self employed, and has been a volunteer for the Awhitu Force for the last 12 years. He has just been deployed for the third time to Australia to help battle the fires that are ravaging the states, sacrificing not only his employment, but valuable family time. It is people like Billy that make you proud to be part of our community, and always knowing that you can count on them. It is great to see so many big events happening in our Franklin community that are drawing in visitors from all around the country side. Why would you want to leave the township for the long weekend when we have so much going on right in our own backyard?
The Sunset Coast BMX track was packed, as they hosted the Oceania BMX Continental Championships. This is only the second time this event has been held in New Zealand and saw both elite riders and amateur racers from around the South Pacific compete, including the likes of Olympian, Sarah Walker.
Waiheke Dirt Track Club also paid our local club a visit last Sunday, and as promised, a full day of action packed racing was had. Our team covered both events, and managed to grab some great photographs.
We have printed a selection of our favourites. However for more great shots, feel free to check them out on our Facebook page – facebook.com/districtpost.
