With the developers of Wesley New Town no longer claiming rights to the name 'Wesley', the search is on for a name for this new town.
Grafton Downs executive director Chris Johnston says, "We are humbled that the community is so connected to a name that is also very important to us. Rather than take the Wesley name from the community, we have decided to look for alternatives which we hope, once chosen, will grow with the same united sense of belonging as this one," he says.
Grafton Downs and Wesley College Trust Board are asking the community for help on choosing a name for the area which will have 5000 homes, a new primary school and town centre.
As well as a new town name, they're looking for more than 200 street names.
Council criteria for new street names includes providing three name options for each street and including the explanation for each name's significance, consultation with local iwi and NZ Post (to ensure no street name duplicates within the Auckland region). The street names then have to be given the final seal of approval by the local Community Board.
For now, the town will be called Wesley Paerata until a new name is selected.
"We'd love your suggestions for street names in particular, but if you are feeling inspired, let us know what you think our new town should be called. It just can't be used anywhere else," Chris says.
