Health Minister Jonathon Coleman says the latest health target results show increased performance at Counties Manukau District Health Board, particularly on the raising healthy kids target.
The six national health targets, which include shorter stays in emergency departments, improved access to elective surgery, faster cancer treatment, increased immunisation, better help for smokers to quit, and raising healthy kids, help(s) to drive improvement in performance across the health system, Dr Coleman said.
“This was reinforced by recent New Zealand research that found that the Emergency Department target is having a significant impact, with around 700 fewer deaths than predicted in 2012 if pre-target trends continue.
“The latest quarterly health target results for January to March 2017 show Counties Manukau DHB continues to perform well, but there’s always more to do.
“Counties Manukau DHB has improved almost 29 per cent and is above the national average for this target (86 per cent), achieving 91 per cent."
Dr Coleman says they want to encourage families to be in touch with primary healthcare professionals who can check for any clinical risk associated with obesity, and encourage families to take action.
“The target is a key part of the Government’s Childhood Obesity Plan. We want to ensure that through the B4 School Check, kids and their families are put in touch with primary healthcare professionals who can check for any clinical risk associated with obesity, and encourage families to take action.
He says results are expected to improve each quarter as referral processes are fully implemented.
“Counties Manukau DHB also exceeded the improved access to elective surgery target, reaching 107 per cent, and achieved the shorter stays in emergency department target of 95 per cent.
However, further work is needed to achieve the better help for smokers to quit target and the increased immunisation target.
The results are supported by the $425 million funding increase Counties Manukau DHB has received over the last eight years. Counties Manukau DHB received an extra $56 million in new money this year, taking the DHB’s total funding to $1.4 billion for 2016/17.
