The wharf in Franklin’s Matakawau Point Reserve near Awhitu has been temporarily closed until further notice.
Agnes McCormack, Head of Operational Management and Maintenance says a recent safety inspection by Auckland Council revealed structural issues with the timber deck and base resulting from aging.
“Wood is rotting and metallic elements have rusted, posing a potential risk to people using the structure,” she says.
The council has closed off public access to the wharf and the stairs leading to it until a specialist coastal structure surveyor has been able to carry out a further safety review.
“Public safety is always our priority and we will wait for the specialist surveyor’s report before making recommendations on the wharf’s future,” Agnes says.
