Firstly, I would like to say Well Done to Claire Harris and her young sons for picking up the litter.
I too, have contacted the council re collection of bags of litter that I have picked up around Pukekohe (in town) and sadly I have also been told 'don't do it' and you will have to get rid of the litter already collected yourself.
The following questions were put forward to Council, who came back with the answers below;
How often are Franklin's rural roadsides cleaned of litter ?
Litter is collected from Franklin rural roads on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
How often are roads in Franklin (Pukekohe, Waiuku) cleaned of litter ?
We are currently looking at enhancing our collections in these areas, but our current agreements vary depending on the road. Some roads are also privately owned, and some are managed by NZTA.
Generally, major roads are litter picked every two months, quarterly and the balance is twice a year. Arterial routes litter picked every three months.
 Does Council get clean-up contractors to recycle any of what is collected? If not, why not?
At this stage rubbish removed is sent to landfill, and we are reviewing this to ensure that anything that can be recycled is recycled appropriately. This will support our vision on zero waste to landfill by 2040.
Is all rubbish made by Council projects recycled?
The council endeavours to dispose of all materials it uses for all of its business and projects appropriately – not all materials can be recycled.
