St Peter’s, Cambridge is presenting the New Zealand secondary schools premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s phenomenal rock musical Starlight Express.
Local Waiuku student, Devin Gregory, who currently boards at St Peter’s, Cambridge is performing as a principle role in the show, playing the diesel race train ‘Greaseball’ – known as the arrogant reigning champion.
The show encompasses acting, singing, dancing and skating so the cast have been practicing their roller skate skills since August last year with countless skating workshops and sessions at the Hamilton Roller Skating Club.
Devin mentions that he had never roller skated before which was quite a challenge, however by putting in many hours on the skates he has managed to step it up quite considerably.
Performing arts is not new to Devin as he has been acting for most of his school life. A recent achievement will see Devin perform in London on the global stage in July for the Shakespeare Globe Center New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company; one of only 23 students selected from New Zealand.
Devin says, “I’ve enjoyed working with everyone, this should be an amazing show and I am very happy to be a part of it.”
Hamilton’s well-known musical theatre director David Sidwell is proud to share his thoughts on the show “Starlight Express. “Who would have thought I’d ever be directing this musical extravaganza! I have always found that if you ask 110% of a St Peter’s student, they give you 150%. This has been confirmed over the years I have been directing the school productions. My decision to ask the students to commit to this extremely ambitious production was not difficult. The staff and students are working tirelessly to bring audiences an amazing theatrical spectacle. Don’t miss it!”
Starlight Express, staged entirely on roller skates, tells the story of a child’s train set that magically comes to life and the various engines that compete to become the ‘Fastest Engine in the World!’
The underdog, Rusty the Steam train, has little chance until he is inspired by the legend of the “Starlight Express” and ultimately defeats his arch-rivals, Greaseball and Electra, before going on to win the hand of the lovely first class coach, Pearl.
The show runs from 5 to 11 May and tickets are available from iTicket (www.iticket.co.nz)
