Waiuku’s Dylan Thomson and co-driver Amy Hudson from Christchurch kick-started their 2017 New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC) campaign at Rally of Otago in Dunedin, with a class win over the weekend.
The 22 year old, and his co-driver, came away with first place in the NZRC category two, finishing 26th overall.
Dylan went into the round, hoping to score points to meet his season goal of finishing with points at every rally of the six-round series.
Both Dylan and Amy also competed in Hayden Paddon’s Hyundai Young Drivers Shootout several months ago, giving them some extra tips for the motorsport.
“Doing the shootout was really rewarding for Amy and I,” Dylan says. “We learnt a lot from everyone there and got a lot of confidence from driving the Hyundai AP4 car and got some helpful tips from Hayden. We’re hoping we can use things that we learnt there to be competitive in the NZRC,” Dylan says.
The NZRC is New Zealand’s premier rally championship, attracting the best drivers in a number of categories for the prestigious MotorSport New Zealand rally championship titles.
The rally got underway with a ceremonial start on Friday evening, before an early start of the 280 stage kilometres on Saturday 8 April. The rally consisted of 14 closed special stages across Saturday and Sunday.
Round 2 is at the end of the month, 28 and 29 April, in Whangarei.
