Mauku School race ready

Mauku School’s annual Fun Run is back, as they prepare to hold their twelfth event.

Taking place on Sunday 9 April, the school is expecting big crowds for their main fundraising event.

“Last year we saw close to 500 people participate, hopefully we see those same numbers again,” says PTA Chair Leanne McMurtrie.

With options for a 10km and 5km run or walk, the day is set to be full of fun and with something for everyone.

Searle Group Ltd and Barfoot and Thompson Waiuku are the key sponsors for the fun run and there will be plenty of spot prizes.

Last year the money from the fundraiser went towards landscaping for the new classroom area, while this year it will go towards upgrading the playground and sports equipment.

Many of the school students will also be taking on the challenge of the fun run, with parents, siblings and friends joining in too.

“It’s a great family event, and community event. The wider community are very supportive,” Leanne says.

The call is also out for teams to dress to impress.

“There’s a great prize hamper for best dressed this year,” Leanne says.

With plenty of spot prizes to be given out, “there’s a good chance you’ll go away with something.”

The Mauku students have also been taking part in the Rod Dixon marathon where they have been running a certain distance each day to make up the full marathon length. The school has tied in the fun run to be the last part of their marathon. The children who complete the fun run over the weekend will receive their Rod Dixon marathon medals on the day.

“There’s always a great sense of achievement for the kids who finish the fun run. They love it, they’re tired, but so excited,” Leanne says.

People can still register for the event online. Online registrations will close on Wednesday 5 April, but those who miss out can also register on the day.
