Threatening ‘begging’ not tolerated
The Waiuku Police received another report this morning of a man begging for money in the Waiuku New World carpark. He was spoken to about his behaviour, and has since moved on.
While they state that begging is not an offence, threatening behaviour or demanding money will not be tolerated, and those who are targeted by this need to call the Police on 111 straight away.
Sergeant Graeme Wood says those who beg are continuing to do it as they are being given money by the generous people in the community.
“If we stop giving them money, they will discontinue to beg. There are many government and non-government agencies that those in need can approach for help, rather than asking for money on the street. We do not tolerate threatening or demanding behaviour, so please make a complaint so that we can follow through.”
