Life Education Counties Manukau’s colourful mobile classroom is a regular sight in Franklin, as it is transferred between 25 local schools throughout the year.
Harold the Giraffe and the classroom’s educator rely on the voluntary help of a local transport company to enable preventative health messages to be delivered to children in their schools. Pukekohe Hiab Transport have provided this support since 2015, but now, Harold is looking for a new company to take over the role.
The bright smiling face of Harold emblazoned on the side, the mobile classroom teaches children about healthy food and nutrition choices, respecting their friend’s differences, how to be proud of their identity and be confident in who they are.
General manager, Michelle Kidd, says the truck company’s logo is always on display on the classroom’s vibrant exterior and is a fantastic way to show the community how they are actively supporting kiwi kids to make healthy choices.
“Children leave their usual classroom and enter the multi-disciplinary, 'magical' classroom environment. Research shows us that delivering our messages in this manner increases the amount of learning and recall a child will have of our lessons. Local help is vital to the continuation of our programme in Franklin."
