Flooding keeps Franklin fire crews busy
With more than half a metre of rain falling last night, fire crews around east Franklin were kept up through the night and early morning to ensure safety for citizens.
The Post spoke with MP for Hunua Andrew Bayly who says everyone is safe and there have been no reports of danger or loss.
The Clevedon fire department received 12 calls last night. They removed the Police car that was swept away on Clevedon-Kawakawa Road early this morning. Two Police officers in the car were rescued by the Clevedon Fire Department. There is one more car in that area which is submerged and will be removed.
Beachlands Maraetai fire crew had 26 phone calls since midnight. Maraetai Coast road is blocked.
Hunua Fire brigade evacuated 180 students, teachers and parents from YMCA Camp Adair early this morning. The students have since been picked up by parents, and everyone involved is safe. The Fire brigade has also turned off power to the site and are preparing for further rain tonight.
Kawakawa Bay is landlocked, a massive slip has blocked Clevedon-Kawakawa Bay road, cutting residents off.
The road to Kaiaua has also been blocked, with the Orere Point Rural Fire Force, who are also cut off, working to clear the road.
MetService say heavy rain is expected to gradually ease this afternoon. However, a further 30 to 60mm of rain is expected to accumulate on top of what has already fallen.
