Red Shed national ‘country gem’

Red Shed Palazzo, Karaka has been presented the national Tucker’s Ridge Pies Best Rural award at the 2017 Meadow Fresh New Zealand Café of the Year announcement event, held in Auckland Thursday 9 February.

For the fifth year running, the annual Awards highlight the diverse, the delicious and the most delightful of the great NZ café culture, shining a light on outstanding cafés across the nation.

Red Shed Palazzo was announced the Auckland region winner of the Tucker’s Ridge Pies Best Rural award in December and can now enjoy the glory of being awarded the national Best Rural crown. Owners, Paul and Kristina Smith say they have been overwhelmed by the recognition.

“It has truly been an incredible journey and we have met some amazing people in the process, who have worked just as hard as we have, and that is very refreshing to see. We have all worked extremely hard to get where were are today—this doesn’t all come handed to you on a platter,” says Kristina.

“However, it isn’t just Paul and I—this award is all thanks to our amazing team. Without them and the support from the amazing community, achieving what we have would just not be possible.”

Judging, tasting and deliberating was conducted by a highly-experienced panel led by NZ’s pre-eminent food and restaurant authority, Kerry Tyack.

“Always fabulously eclectic, the enormous red barn-like gathering place that is Red Shed Palazzo remains a country winner. It’s bold, kitsch, cluttered and interesting with undeniable warmth. No other rural café has quite the mix and match of seating options, the menu of generous portions and a genuine welcome.”

“Whether you opt for inside with its racks of magazines and quirky water fountain or outside in the leafy garden with water bowls for your dog; the service is prompt and efficient. Every beverage from coffee to smoothie is well made, the cabinet is full of house-made savoury and sweet deliciousness and the menu offers you another extensive set of fabulous options. ”

“At Red Shed Palazzo you will share the space with a fantastic variety of customers such as the local book club members to classic car enthusiasts and those passing through and everyone will leave happy! It’s a true country gem that the judging team have no hesitation in recommending as a must visit. ”

The Red Shed Palazzo also had another reason to celebrate last weekend, as they have just reached their fifth birthday milestone.

“Again, we cannot thank our team, our customers and our fantastic community enough for the continued support. This award and recognition is just so neat for our area,”
says Kristina.
